PRESCOTT VALLEY - Dust off that old plastic lightsaber.

It may come in handy on Saturday for the Sci-Fi, Anime, Fantasy, Etc., (SAFE) Convention at the Prescott Valley (PV) Public Library. The March 29 event runs from 2-4 p.m. and features a number of workshops, a panel discussion, cosplay and more. The teen library event is free to the public.

While PV Public Library Events Coordinator Roy Jenkins doesn't expect crowds as big as conventions in Phoenix and San Diego, he does expect a packed facility.

"This activity might be the largest special event that Prescott Valley has ever had," Jenkins said. "We expect it to be very well attended with a lot of people in costume."

At 10 a.m. SAFE Con organizers will kick off the event with an opening ceremony followed by a martial arts exhibition. Free Asian food and refreshments will be served at 11 a.m. At noon, D.C. Comics artist Dave Beaty will talk about his experiences working in the comic book genre. Game On hosts continuous games beginning at 11 a.m. as well.

At 1 p.m., teenage competitors will take part in an art competition. They will be grouped in 12-15 and 16-18 age brackets, with each artist allowed to compete in black and white and color categories. Each of the artists will have one hour to complete a Manga-styled character. The winner of the competition will have a chance for their art to be put on a library bookmark.

At 1:30 p.m., illustrator, writer and graphic designer Alec Kozak will host a special panel titled "Publishing Your Own Comic Book."

The famed Assassin's Creed cosplay group will perform at 2 p.m., followed by a cosplay competition at 2:30 p.m. with prizes for teen winners. All ages, wearing store bought or homemade costumes, can participate in the cosplay presentation. Participants have to register for the competition prior to the event, however.

The library is located 7401 E. Civic Circle. For info, call 928-759-6196.
